Hear from our teams on how they got into the industry and what it’s like to be a part of Technicolor. Avril He, Senior Producer at The Mill talks about how she stumbled into the visual effects industry. Discover more about her role and what inspires Avril.
Hey Avril, tell us about your favorite project & why you’ve chosen it?
My favourite project I’ve worked on would probably be Amazon Gods of Champion. The project was for the Champions League, featuring Italian footballers immortalized as Roman Gods in their heavenly Olympus temple. This project was most interesting to me because it was not only for the Chinese market. The agency, client, and production crew were all in Italy and we were in China working remotely with the creative teams and director to deliver this beautiful piece within a very tight timeline.
Why did you get into the visual effects industry?
It was an interesting story, I had a peek of how things are shot and edited into video when I stumbled upon an opportunity to act in a web series. Though this web series didn’t continue to the end, I got to make some friends, and one of them introduced me to an EP (later became my boss) to a production house. After 5 years working on set, I decided to try visual effects as it had always amazed me and made me wonder where there magical images come from.
If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t get overly anxious on things that has not happened yet.
What excited you the most about working at Technicolor Group?
Diversity, possibilities and amazing works.
Are there any trends in the industry inspiring you right now?
Recently everyone has been talking about AI technology to create concept frames by simply typing some keywords. I think this is very interesting. With this new technology, everyone has an opportunity to create and is not limited by a lack of skills in drawing or specific software. This opens great potential for more interesting, inspiring creativity.
What are your predictions for the world of VFX in 5 years?
Computer, technology, AI, and others will only keep developing. It will be interesting and exciting to see what the new possibilities could be, such as a new method to create VFX more efficiently and more accurately. I read that someone is creating a software that has a massive database for animal character animation, which will greatly reduce the time that you would normally spend on characters. All those new developments are fascinating. It makes me feel like everything is possible.
