SMPTE’s first in-person Awards Gala in Three Years, took place on 27th October 2022 at Ovation Hollywood with Mariana Acuna Acosta, Senior Vice President of Virtual Production representing Technicolor Group and presenting the The Natalie and Herbert T. Kalmus Medal award alongside SMPTE Committee chair, Josh Pines, Visual Effects artist known for Jurassic Park, Pride, American Gun and many more.
It was such an honor to give away the Natalie M. and Herbert T. Kalmus Medal at the SMTPE gala alongside Joshua Pines, not only because the award went to Patrick Renner which included innovations in motion picture acquisition and post-production but also because Natalie M. was a pioneering woman in color science and her name was recently added to the Medal recognizing her contributions to the industry.

The Natalie and Herbert T. Kalmus Medal, sponsored in 2022 by Technicolor Group, honors the recipient by recognizing outstanding contributions that reflect a commitment to the highest standards of quality and innovation in motion picture postproduction and distribution services.
The winner of the The Natalie and Herbert T. Kalmus Medal 2022, sponsored by Technicolor Group is Patrick Renner. In recognition of his vision, actualization, and continued refinement of on-set color management and color grading tools, as embodied in the Pomfort Livegrade software platform, providing cinematographers and digital imaging technicians a system that is creatively flexible yet technically robust, with an underlying image and metadata pipeline architecture supporting a wide range of workflows, resulting in ubiquitous adoption on live-action sets worldwide.
Patrick Renner is a specialist in designing and developing software systems and applications for media management and video processing in production and postproduction workflows.
In 2010 he co-founded the software company Pomfort which develops applications and services used in professional film productions worldwide. He initially developed the Livegrade software product and, until today, leads the product management efforts at Pomfort. In his early career, Patrick Renner acquired in-depth knowledge about professional film production workflows as an IT professional in a large postproduction facility. There, he also helped build and run the infrastructure for one of the first DI grading facilities in Europe. In addition, he contributed to several software projects at ARRI, Munich, related to the ARRISCAN film scanner and the original ALEXA camera.
