Monthly Rewind: Mufasa: The Lion King, Academy Awards, Golden Globes, The Zero Malaria Experience, Snow White, The Game Awards, and More

We’ve reached the final rewind of 2024, and it’s absolutely packed with magic – ’tis the season, after all. MPC are excited to see Mufasa: The Lion King shortlisted for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards. The Mill took home Silver at the Grand Prix Stratégies du Sport 2024 with their magnificent film for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Mikros Animation are spreading joy this festive season with Mickey Mouse Funhouse on Disney+, and Technicolor Games saw EA Sports FC25 triumph at The Game Awards.

At Technicolor Group, we’re delighted by an exciting evolution of our leadership team, having welcomed David Conley as the President of MPC and member of the Technicolor Group Executive Committee.

David brings over two decades of experience in the VFX industry, having contributed to some of our most celebrated films and television projects. Most recently, he served as the Executive Producer at Wētā FX, where he played a pivotal role in delivering groundbreaking visuals for projects such as Avatar: The Way of Water, The Last of Us Series, and War is Over!

Mufasa: The Lion King, the highly anticipated prequel to Disney’s The Lion King, has been shortlisted for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards! This recognition highlights the artistry, innovation, and dedication of our extraordinarily talented global team at MPC. A huge congratulations to everyone involved in this magnificent project.

The Pride Lands are calling… Mufasa: The Lion King hits the big screen on December 20, 2024! There’s just two days to go until you can witness the pure magic yourself.

And since we’re so excited for Mufasa: The Lion King, we’re going to throw in the final trailer once more.

But that’s not all from the Academy Awards Shortlist! Two other phenomenal projects, for which MPC provided stunning VFX and contributed to the image post-production, have been shortlisted for International Feature Film: Emilia Pérez will represent France, while Vermiglio will represent Italy.

Emilia Pérez continues shine bright on the international stage, with 32 awards and 40 nominations so far, including 10 recent nods at the Golden Globes.  
 
As the fifth collaboration between MPC and esteemed director Jacques Audiard, this film showcases the power of strong creative partnerships and stellar collaboration. Shot almost entirely on blue screens in the Paris region, our team crafted 350+ stunning VFX shots to seamlessly blend visuals, bringing this magnificent story to life.

A huge congratulations to MPC India for winning the best TV/Web Series/OTT (VFX) Award at MAAC’s 24 FPS – International Animation Awards for Poacher

The team crafted breathtaking animals, helping to highlight the intense battle between wildlife poachers and the heroes protecting endangered species.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Goosebumps have been nominated for Outstanding Visual Effects for a Live Action Program at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards! Stay tuned as the awards ceremony takes place on March 15, 2025.

MPC Paris collaborated on over 100 VFX shots for Drone, directed by Simon Bouisson.

Under the supervision of Hugues Namur and with the VFX production of Estelle Matranga, the drone, a central element of the story, came to life through precise and rigorous work. Check out the truly impressive VFX breakdown below.

Take a fascinating journey behind the scenes of The Serpent Queen S2, for which MPC Paris produced 310 VFX shots across 8 episodes, in close collaboration with Excuse My French. In just nine months, our incredible artists imagined a captivating visual universe, manipulating elements such as fire and smoke, heart-racing wounds, set inlays, and stealthy snakes in full CG.  

Under the expert supervision of Cyrille Bonjean, VFX Supervisor Emmanuelle Pianko, VFX Producer Philippe Desfretier, Compositing Supervisor and Antoine Carlon, CG Supervisor, every detail was carefully considered to elevate the story and transport viewers to another time.

The Mill

For the first time, SXSW is heading to London. Will MacNeil, Creative Director at The Mill, is representing Technicolor Group with an inspiring session proposal titled “Digital Empathy: Building Human-Centered Experiences.”

With public voting now open, we need your help to bring this epic proposal to the stage! Follow the steps below to cast your vote before December 19th.

Dive into this episode to discover how Mikros Animation’s teams in Montréal and Bangalore joined forces to create the film’s dynamic visuals. Directed by Cal Brunker, the movie brought together 300+ talented artists under the guidance of Executive Producers Laurence Vacher and Pierre Escande, with Line Producer Julie Marouzé ensuring smooth production.

The animation was led by Animation Director Guillermo Dupinet and Animation Co-Supervisor Jérôme Saravas, while the FX team, under FX Supervisor Andre LeBlanc and FX Co-Supervisor Corbin Mayne, crafted stunning superpowers and action-packed sequences. From immersive environments to glowing energy effects, every single detail added a fresh level of excitement while staying true to the iconic PAW Patrol style.

Olivier Mitonneau, Set & Character Surfacing Supervisor, explains how Pectine, the charismatic new character in Astérix: The Secret of the Magic Potion, was crafted. From her radiant colours to the delicate way her dress responds to light, every detail of Pectine’s design was thoughtfully created to blend seamlessly into the cartoon-inspired world of Astérix.

EA Sports FC 25 picked up Best Sports/Racing Game at The Game Awards! For the 2025 season, Technicolor Games’ 3D art services were called into action, providing assets for both characters and environments. This involved contributing to player heads, wardrobes, kits and pitch accessories, as well as stadium creation, crowd assembly, and lighting.

Two of Technicolor Games’ sensational projects, EA Sports FC 25 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, have been recognised in the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards longlist!
