Monthly Rewind: Groundbreaking Colour Innovation, Unreal Engine, The Academy Museum, and more.

October has been a wicked month across Technicolor Group! So much so, we introduced our ultra handy Mid-Month Drop, so you can stay in the loop easier than ever before.

Excitement is building at MPC with the release of Mufasa: The Lion King now less than three months away. The Mill have been collecting nominations like nobody’s business, with recognition at the CLIO and EMEA Shots awards. Mikros Animation invite you behind the magic in their enchanting new series showcasing the behind-the-scenes of your fave projects. Technicolor Games are sharing their wisdom on all things Unreal Engine, while counting down the days to the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

As we approach our 110-year anniversary of pioneering visual experiences and colour innovation here at Technicolor Group, we’re proud to announce an exciting collaboration with the Colour and Vision Research Laboratory at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

This partnership aims to investigate disagreements between observers about the colours they perceive when looking at content on the latest wide gamut display devices, which could have significant implications for the film, television, and broader display technology industries, including home viewing and cinema.

The Academy Museum are proud to present ‘The Wonders of Technicolor’ film series, from Oct 6th – Nov 23rd. This series celebrates the vibrant and immeasurable impact of Technicolor on Hollywood productions and audiences. As we approach our 110th year, there is no better time to revisit our history.

The countdown is on! With less than three months to go until the release of Mufasa: The Lion King, MPC are gearing up to share this wondrous story with the world.

Only in theatres, December 20th

The team had a whole lot of fun creating the visual effects for Chasse Gardée. Under the supervision of Arnaud Fouquet, with VFX Production support from Fanny Bilani, 180+ expert shots brought the film’s eccentric universe to life. Check out the VFX breakdown below.

MPC are thrilled to welcome Lucinda Keeler as Head of Production for its London studio. With over two decades in the VFX industry, Keeler brings a wealth of experience and leadership to this pivotal role. Her focus will be on optimising workflows, advancing technical capabilities, and overseeing the delivery of shots for high-profile film and episodic projects. Under her guidance, MPC aims to further elevate its production processes, reinforcing its position as a leader in visual effects and animation. 

Unlock the magnificent behind-the-scenes world of Vikings: Valhalla Season 3 in this exclusive VFX Voice feature.  

The team provided 500 visual effects for eight episodes, with a keen eye on creating CG environments that existed in the 11th century, in particular Syracuse, Constantinople, Greenland, Poland, Kattegat and Winchester Cathedral. For a taste of the excellence, check out the VFX breakdown.

Halloween season is upon us. There’s no better way to kick-off festivities than with a swashbuckling throwback to the concept art for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Speaking of Concept Art, revisit the stunning environment work created by MPC’s Art Department for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus.

MPC Paris are proud to have collaborated on Animale, directed by Emma Benestan.

Under the VFX supervision of Lise Fischer, with Emmanuelle PIANKO in VFX Production and Hélène Vanovre as Executive Producer, the team took on some major technical challenges: design, 3D modeling and shader creation for ultra-realistic fur effects.

With 74 VFX shots in just four months, our talented artists were dedicated to bringing the feature to life.

Based on true events, Rematch is a psychological thriller that dives into the legendary 1997 showdown between Garry Kasparov, one of the greatest chess players in history, and IBM’s supercomputer, Deep Blue. Two minds in direct confrontation.

The Mill

Let’s kick off with The Mill’s latest award news! The Mill is shortlisted at the Clio Entertainment Awards:

But that’s not all! The Mill also received two nominations for Ad of the Year at the EMEA Shots Awards.

The Mill+ team led by Director and Editor, Al Benoit, have done it again for Northwell Health! At the MUSE Awards, Northwell Health took home multiple accolades, including three Platinum and one Gold.

Everyone deserves a bit of glamour. Fashion Week may be over, but you can immerse yourself in a world of decadence with The Mill’s mesmerising Luxury and Fashion reel.

This month’s project releases include:

⭐️ Nespresso ‘The Power of Aluminum’

Bringing Nespresso’s commitment to sustainability to life. The team collaborated closely with Nespresso to create a campaign that not only informs but also inspires.

⭐️ Nina Ricci Venus

A celestial campaign introduces the new Venus fragrance, inspired by a timeless masterpiece.

Behind the Mikros Magic: Episode 1 #TMNTMovie – Shaping Superfly

Known for his charismatic presence, Superfly perfectly captures Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhems gritty, hand-drawn style. The team carefully crafted his insect-like features, such as his expressive, pupil-less eyes and detailed shell, to match the unique visual direction of the film.

This breakdown highlights the animation and technical processes used to bring Superfly to life, focusing on elements like tone mapping and dynamic lighting to enhance his character design.

Superfly’s striking design and animation earned the team a VES Award nomination, showcasing Mikros Animation’s creative expertise in character development.

Behind the Mikros Magic: Episode 2 PAW Patrol: The Movie – Building Epic FX

Corbin Mayne, FX Co-Supervisor, takes us behind the scenes of PAW Patrol: The Movie, directed by Cal Brunker, to reveal how the film’s epic FX were created!

From designing an extended firework sequence with procedural systems to crafting a spectacular water cannon simulation, the FX team ensured each effect looked natural while maintaining continuity from shot to shot.

Mikros were delighted to be guests on The Animashow! Sabry Otmani was joined by Mikros Animation’s Julien Meesters and Sandrine Nguyen to explore the evolution of the Parisian studio, its commitment to animation and image quality, and the importance of creative collaboration with partner studios in the U.S., such as Paramount, Netflix, DreamWorks, and more.

Julien and Sandrine reflected on their journeys in the animation industry, the significance of developing their own intellectual properties, and the challenges posed by international partnerships. The conversation highlights successful projects like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sonic Boom, Thelma The Unicorn, and SpongeBob SquarePants, while also discussing the artistic and business aspects of producing animated films and series today.
