As the creative marketing community gathers in Cannes this week, we’re looking back at some of The Mill’s most notable Cannes Lions wins.
The five-day International Festival of Creativity celebrates the cream of the crop, the game-changing work produced in the fast-paced, highly competitive world of Advertising. Winning at Cannes Lions is a huge achievement, one that The Mill has been lucky enough to experience more than 20 times in the last 20 years.
In 2022, our talented teams returned home with four wins, dominating the VFX category entirely! Amazon’s heartwarming Christmas ad ‘Unlikely Friendship’ took home the Bronze award in VFX, narrowly beaten by Samsung ‘Spider and the Window’ and Burberry’s ‘Open Spaces’ that stole the Silver and Gold awards, respectively.
‘Open Spaces’ went on to dominate the award circuit, winning the top spots at D&AD, Ciclope, the LIA’s, the Epica Awards, the Clio Awards and more. Directed by MEGAFORCE, ‘Open Spaces’ blends reality with fantasy whilst keeping freedom and exploration at the heart of the campaign’s philosophy. The cast bound weightlessly through fields, defying gravity, expressing their freedom and inspiring people to explore new spaces in a visually stunning film set in the British Countryside.
If a silver award for VFX wasn’t enough, the adorable Samsung spot also achieved Gold in the Animation category in 2022. The unusual love story focuses on a fascination with the impressive camera of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, whilst also standing as a heart-warming statement of tolerance and openness.
We certainly can’t touch on our favorite Cannes Lions winners without mentioning the epic PlayStation spot, ‘Feel the Power of Pro’, that took home the Silver award for CG in 2021. The film brings to life the overwhelming emotions you can experience when you play PS4. We follow the journey of water in reverse from a world fully submerged, to a single droplet rising upwards revealing the source – a tear from our player overwhelmed by a powerful moment in Death Stranding on PS4 Pro.
